A Whole Lot of Fun Shaking at Shaggy’s
While eating out is a pleasure; eating out at Shaggy’s is FUN. With activities including games, singing, and decorations, dining is a delightful experience. Their menu offers regional favorites as well as special treats, and the food and views are sure to make your visit memorable.
Victoria Raskett, Shaggy’s Marketing Manager, met with me at their Biloxi location (1763 Beach Blvd), one of Shaggy’s three open locations, the others in Pass Christian and Pensacola. “We offer family fun in an entertaining atmosphere,” she says. “‘Recommended for all ages 0-99’ is our motto.” With all of their locations on the water, diners can enjoy the smell of the sea drifting in through their open windows, while relaxing in front of beautiful beaches and gorgeous sunsets. Keep active with their outside activities on the beach areas, such as volleyball in Biloxi and fishing off the pier at the others, or, in the winter, snuggle up near the fireplaces.
“I got the name Shaggy’s from a popular place that thrived in 1940s downtown Pass Christian—Shaggy’s Tavern,” Ron Ladner, Shaggy’s Founder reports. “The original Shaggy’s had a colorful story that is part of Pass Christian lore. So I thought it would be fun to bring back the Shaggy’s name in another ‘colorful’ establishment.”
Shaggy’s menu features many popular items, such as the “Shaggy’s Stacker,” fried green tomatoes and crab cakes topped with Cajun sauce. Eggplant St. Shaggy’s presents medallions of flash fried eggplant topped with shrimp and crawfish, yellow and red bell peppers, all in a sherry cream sauce that will melt in your mouth. For meat lovers, try Shaggy’s “Big Pig” pork sandwich, slow roasted pulled pork served with potato salad, coleslaw, and homemade BBQ sauce. Another popular choice is one of their baskets, shrimp, oyster, fish, chicken, or combo, complete with jalapeno hush puppies, coleslaw and fries. Wash down your food with one of their margaritas, sweet and sour with tequila, or half-price wine and draft during happy hours. The younger set will enjoy the children’s menu displayed on a chalkboard, where a half dozen choices include a drink and side such as pineapple rings or mandarin oranges, all for four dollars. Add a Frisbee for $1.99.
Shaggy’s interiors are modeled on the restaurants in the Caribbean. Bright colors and laid-back décor make you feel like you’re on vacation as soon as you walk through the door. Fishing is a big part of Shaggy’s themes, including real stuffed marlins and Mahi Mahi. Fishing photos and license plates brought in by customers plaster the walls.
Shaggy’s Biloxi has just opened their 4,000-square-foot covered deck addition called Shaggy’s Sand Bar. Featuring a large open-air, full-service bar serving appetizers and raw oysters, a stage for live music, and restroom facilities, it provides spectacular views and breathtaking sunsets. Ron says, “We now have an awesome, unique room overlooking the Gulf that gives us many more options for providing fun events and activities for our customers.” The Sand Bar serves as a private party space for weddings, receptions, birthdays, meetings, anniversaries, reunions, and sports events.
Not just a restaurant, Shaggy’s is active in giving back to the community. Shaggy’s Kids Fish Foundation was started to introduce kids to fishing and marine life on the Gulf Coast. Fully funded through Shaggy’s restaurants, the programs include fishing rodeos and food and toy drives during the holidays. Shaggy’s was an inaugural sponsor of Café Climb in Gulfport, an organization designed to help youth in the community to go to culinary school. Shaggy’s was honored in 2013 with the “Give Award,” the Governor initiative for volunteers in excellence. They also received the outstanding business community outreach award for 2013. Their world class fishing team, run by president and co-founder Ron Ladner, recently won sixth overall in the 2013 World Offshore Championship in Costa Rica.
